houseA reader drew this place to our attention last night knowing we’d get all hot and bothered. This is a real mansion, a whole step up from a rowhouse brownstone in size and grandeur. $1.6 million is an equally gigantic chunk of change for a house in Bedford Stuyvesant. (It’s only a few blocks in from Clinton Hill, however.) But 12 bathrooms? What do you do with 12 bathrooms. The broker promises in the ad that there are “many historic attributes” and the exterior looks well cared for enough that we wouldn’t doubt it, but, man, do we wish Relo Realty (huh?) had included some interior shots with the ad. As usual, we’d like to know what the block–Quincy and Bedford–is like.

  1. Most comments on this site are racist. Give it another 5 years, when Bedford Stuyvesant becames like Clinton Hill and Fort Green. individuals like most of the individual on this site will say, Bedford Stuyvesant is the desirable area because of the Beautiful Victorian Brownstones and Mansions. Most People are not conveying that because there are not enough white people residing in Bedford Stuyvesnt. If you know the history of Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan, you wouldn’t be fast to express and exhibit ignorance and racist comments. Central Clinton Hill, Fort Green, Park Slople and the Lower Manhattan were identical to Bedford Stuyvesant 15- 20 years ago.

  2. Don’t you need to get a certificate of non-harassment from all former SRO occupants before you can change the C of O? I hear that’s the real hard part there, and the reason so many properties once used as SROs are so hard to sell/buy.

  3. Wow!

The price is dropping by the hour. PropertyShark has a for sale listing for this place at $1.45 million. Apparently it is in contract.

“Hurry, the contract is out, but not signed on this Mansion. Convert this rooming house back to its original splendor and nevor have to worry about moving again. 6600 plus square feet in the heart of Bedford Stuyvesant. Please principals only.”

  4. The block is a couple of blocks down from mine. I must say it is a little freaky. Not a brownstone block, more like a total mish-mash of styles. I agree that it must be an SRO. too bad, it has a very cool exterior.

There is a similarly large house for sale by Century 21 on Franklin bet. Gates and Quincy. I think it’s listed at 1.5. It has white siding and a very nice front garden. It looks to be a beautiful old rambling place. Apparently it’s a wreck inside and I don’t think it will ever sell for more than 850. or it may never sell because it is located next to the most hideous building in all of Bed-Stuy, a poured concrete monstrosity that is so ugly you have to shield your eyes when you pass by. There are several like it in the vicinity and they are all equally retina-searing.

How they were ever allowed to be built is a mystery to me. They make the other new construction in the area seem positively breathtaking, and that’s saying a lot.

  5. It sure isn’t maintained like a rooming house. Maybe it was a rooming house at some point, but has long since been made into a house? The ad mentions commercial uses for it, even though it is in an R6 zone.

I think Brownstoner was mentioning that the house is a few blocks from Clinton Hill because Bed-Stuy is such a huge neighborhood, and because closer proximity to downtown means higher property values.

  6. Why jump down Brownstoner’s throat on this. It is a high price for a property in Bed Stuy. The fact that it is closer to Clinton Hill would arguably raise the potential sale price because Clinton Hill commands higher prices.
