For the life of us, we can’t figure this one out. Billed as a three-family limestone on Herkimer and Brooklyn Avenue, this building looks to us to be neither fish nor fowl. The cornice and woodwork around the windows look to be old, as does the interior woodwork around the window. But that center limestone piece with the closed off doorway strikes us as strange, as do the two side entrances. Here’s our theory: This was an originally a single woodframe house with a center entrance that more recently was added on to on both sides, hence the the side entrances and white vinyl windows. We’re not sure how to explain the center limestone piece with the balconies. Any other theories? It’s not clear to us either whether the $719,000 asking price is for the whole building or for half. Wacky stuff.

  1. This property (339-341) was sold in ’03 for a mere $108K to an outfit that is owned by the current owners. The company behind this seem very shady: DSD Properties Corp./ Cop2 llc/Carlton Capital Corp./ Forest Park Properties.

  2. Let me amend former comment to say that the original construction of the center stairs was done years ago. The last time I walked by there, one could enter the building only by the now blocked off entrance in the front. You then went up the staircase to gain access to each apartment. The place was really a mess.

  3. This is close to Restoration Plaza, and is on a block that rumor has it will be developed commercially soon, in the form of a large commercial shopping plaza of some kind. I’ve walked by it often and tried to figure out what someone was thinking, in terms of “renovation”, but can’t think that convolutedly myself, and gave up. Whoever did the center stairs did so years and years ago, it’s been that way as long as I’ve been in the neighborhood. The other “improvements” were done in the last year.

This block is partially residential, partially warehouses and commercial type buildings, and some empty lots.

  4. This used to be a six family building that was converted into 2 three-family “buildings.” It was marred by this renovation in that there was a center winding staircase in the front center. Most of its details have been removed with its new reincarnation. I am assuming that this photo is not that recent, since the stairs have been recently boarded up. The rooms are extremely small and the only details left inside is the wood framing the windows. There is little else inside to distinguish this from the many shoddy new construction projects that Forest Park Properties are involved in
    throughout the boroughs.
I am sending in more detailed photos.

These two 3 family “buildings” were first offered for $750k and is now being marketed for $719.

Forest Park Properties is a fringe development outfit that tends to over-price everything and they have quite a few projects languishing on the market due to their Shylock-like aversion to co-brokering.
