A year ago we sounded the alarms about efforts by the new owners of the giant Hall Street Cold Storage complex in Wallabout to get a residential variance, a move that would likely have involved tearing down the six-story structure. A couple of weeks ago, however, it became clear—in a billboard-sized way (see photo on the jump)—what HK Management plans to do with the space, at least in the short- to medium-term. Like several other properties in the area, 30 Hall Street is being converted into self-storage space. Not exactly community-building stuff but at least they’re not tearing it down.

  1. I wonder if they would have demolished anyway – these buildings are pretty large, and may have more floor area than would be allowed under a rezoning. Regardless, I don’t think preservation got in the way of this – more likely the costs of the variance vs. the return in this market. The Landmarks Commission has taken no action, so certainly consideration of Wallabout as a historic district did not stymie this development.

  2. Mr. B…that may be the case but it seems that the process took a wrong turn or went astray when the actual result is that big green thing with those period appropriate signs! Consideration of historic districts needs to be somewhat flexible in its approach. If the result of a stalemate is this mess then everyone loses.

  3. obviously we must preserve the remaining massive hulking derelict waterfront warehouses as a reminder of our industrial roots and to provide cool photo backdrops for fashion and magazine shoots.

  4. The whole Wallabout area is under consideration for becoming a historic district. Imagine this building with a restored facade and some nice big windows. Definitely worth preserving, especially for the purpose of maintaining the character of the overall area.

  5. I’m missing something here. Why should that building be preserved as a historic structure?

If it was preservationists that got in the way of developing that site then they got what they deserved…a storage building that looks like a derelict building because they were making it too costly to proceed with anything otherwise.
