House Tour Season kicks off on Sunday in Fort Greene. Whether you already bought your tix or not ($25 cash day-of), the self-guided tour starts at the BAM Garden at Fulton and Lafayette where you pick up your map and brochure. This year’s focus has a different spin than in the past: In addition to the old-school Victorian gems you’d expect (nine of them, to be exact), there is a modern component specifically designed to address the issue of how contemporary architects are working within the context of the historic architecture. Unless you’re planning on dropping big bucks for a top-floor condo, this may be your last chance to check out the views from the tower of the Williamsburgh Bank Building. Take lots of pictures!

Was $25 really worth it?
Did the tour this Sunday – skipped all but one brownstone (Clermont) and skipped the Bank. Wow, incredible plaster ceilings in all the houses. Not so crazy about any of the kitchens I saw, so I’m still looking for ideas for our brownstone kitchen. It really feels like having a kitchen in the back parlor with an island really shrinks the rooms – and these are 20+footers.
I did the FG house tour back in the late ’90s and it was really fun and interesting. Can’t say the same about the CH that followed the next year. The tour showed no old brownstones and was basically a Corcoron selling tour of artists lofts on the border of BedStuy. Anyone remember that?
Anyway, I hope the new FG tour is not Corcoran-ed.
I spoke too soon. The Times DID have a listing of the FG Tour in their calendar yesterday:

However, its rather strangely worded–makes it look like its a BAM, rather than FG tour.
IMO the Courier-Life lising of Brooklyn House Tours is better:

Unfortunately the NY Times house tour listing was bumped from this Thursday’s House and Home Section. Hopefully it will run next Thursday, but that doesn’t help the Ft. Greene tour organizors. It’s hearbreaking to work so hard on something and not get all the publicity it deserves 🙁
PS 20 will be hosting a bake sale in conjunction with the house tour. Please stop by from 12-5 right outside the Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church corner of South Oxford Street and Lafayette Avenue.
