555-Carlton-Avenue-1208.jpgThis lovely, down-on-its-luck house at 555 Carlton Avenue in Prospect Heights has been flirting with foreclosure for a year and a half, but has always managed to dodge the bullet. (We wrote it up in the Summer of 2007.) It’s supposed to be on the block again tomorrow with a lien of $509,405. Anyone know the story behind the house is? 360 Adams Street, Room 261, 3 p.m.

  1. This one is really interesting..wish we weren’t working tomorrow so we can check this out. It most likely will not make it to auction as there are always last minute deals for well located houses AY notwithstanding.

  2. Just to clarify 1:40’s comment, it’s close enough to walk to 321, but it’s not zoned for 321. Nor, I believe, is it zoned for 282, which falls between the two. Used to be easy for folks in Prospect Heights to get a variance for 282, but that changed a few years back.

  3. I’ve always thought this house was very pretty. Love the projecting bay window. I never felt it was too close to the yards when I’ve strolled down that way. Yes it is close, but not on top of it. It’s close to Flatbush Avenue and the whole PS scene, which I think would add to its value. You can walk your kids to 321 from here easily, provided you’ve already go them in the door.

  4. Hmm, that’s unfortunate — I really like Carlton as a block, but Dean street is really hurt by its proximity to the yards. Nonetheless, it’s a pretty awesome location in terms of all the transportation and great neighborhoods within walking distance.

$500k for a full Prospect Heights brownstone, even if it needs gut reno, isn’t a terrible deal. But yeh, you shouldn’t expect the surroundings to look too nice any time soon.
