Clearly the boldest departure from brownstone tradition on the Fort Greene House Tour was the parlor floor renovation at 203 Washington Park which featured poured and buffed concrete floors as well as an open-plan loft-style kitchen/dining/living area. We thought the modern approach was largely successful but agree with an earlier commenter that the juxtaposition to the shlubby traditional hallway was a little jarring. Perhaps the coolest part of the design, though, was the giant wall of windows overlooking the garden. GMAP

  1. I volunteered at that house so I had a lot of time there. Some people missed the the garden floor which was also really beautiful… The master bedroom overlooked the garden with same window treatment. I disagree about the front hall, I loved the contrast between the two. It was a welcomed respite from alot of Victoriana on the tour. Apparently there was not alot of detail left in the house when the owners bought it so they didn’t remove much.

The polished concrete floors had radiant heat in them which appealed to me but they were a little too austere to my taste. There was also a really cool dog door that was operated by a magnet on the dog’s collar. Eventhough the house is really minimal, the owners and architect obviously put alot of thought into this. In my opinion, when minimalism is done right, which is rare, it is not simplistic.

  2. i loved this house. im sure it is great to wake up every morning looking at a wall of glass to a garden. i thought the kitchen was cool, especially how they had the same countertops and sinks throughout the house, including the bathrooms, if i remember correctly. the only thought that i had was how this house would age. it looks cutting edge now, but will it last as long as the other styles of brownstones in 50+ years.

i also thought that the wood furnture was pretty typical. it looked like he had just bought out DWR. I think some dark hardwood desks and coffee tables would have looked better, but that is a different conversation.
