An intriguing one-bedroom for sale in an 1890s mansion in the Bedford Historic District is an income-restricted HDFC co-op and has original details as well as recent updates. It’s on the top floor of 237 Hancock Street, the former W. G. Randolph mansion.
Built for a clothing executive and his family, the 1891 Romanesque Revival pile is dripping with columns and terra-cotta ornament. It was designed by architect Peter J. Lauritzen, whose other notable buildings include the Union League Club in Crown Heights and the Offerman Building in Downtown Brooklyn.
While it’s unclear how literally to take the virtually staged photos, they show an attractive living room with a stunning and unusual original mantel with period tile. The petite space is also outfitted with a small dining table.
A recently renovated u-shaped kitchen is open to the main room and has white upper cupboards, a dishwasher, and wood floor with inlaid border. Another corner of the main room under the window is shown set up with a desk.
Through a sliding barn door is the bedroom, big enough for a queen bed, according to the listing. The bathroom has white subway wall tile, white fixtures, and a wood floor.
The apartment does not have any closets but the floor plan appears to show two freestanding wardrobes near the front door. The three-story, 10-unit building has a shared backyard and roof deck.
The compact unit is restricted to buyers with 120 percent of Area Median Income — $136,080 for one person or $155,520 for two. It last sold in 2013 for $80,000. Maintenance is $690 a month.
An open house by appointment is set for Sunday, August 31 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Listed by Ronald Harvey of Compass, the apartment is asking $400,000. What do you think?
