Via an email blast from the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative: “As you may know, Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez included $14 million in the Transportation Bill of 2005 that is now contributing to the implementation of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. This was the first funding for the greenway and it made the project viable. Unfortunately, both the House and Senate transportation bills of 2012 eliminate dedicated funding for walking and bicycling despite 20 years of successful sustainable development building safer and healthier communities. But, there is a solution! U.S. Senators Ben Cardin (D-Md.) and Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) have introduced an amendment (Amdt. #1549) to the Senate bill that would ensure communities a fair shot at dedicating funding for trails, walking and bicycling. Please ask your senator to support the Cardin/Cochran amendment. Your senator’s backing could help ensure that communities like ours will have the opportunity to apply a tiny slice of the federal transportation funding to build facilities that make it safe to walk and bicycle.”
