City to 348 Clermont Owners: Pay Up!

Remember the plight of 348 Clermont Avenue, the old Fort Greene brownstone whose demolition we chronicled back in March? Well, The Times’ Local blog now reports that the city is going after the owners for what could amount to a pretty serious chunk of change: First, there’s the $119,000 cost of demolition and then there’s a $5,000 a day running tab for the years that the owners failed to maintain the building. Beaucoup d’argent. GMAP
There is another building in fall-downable shape on the
400 block of Clermont (438?). I hope that the outcome here will encourage these guys to repair the place. DOB already forced them to reinforce the walls. I feel bad for the attached building owners.
Sigh…. I know. Yet we can give millions away to a developer. We sure know how to blow through money.
Good luck with that. I don’t know if the circumstances of this case make it different but the city seems to have no way to enforce DOB fines and having them on record seems only to come into play when someone sells the property. In the case of developers’ building or zoning violations, our completely inept state senate voted down legislation that would allow the city to put a lien on the property until fines are paid. So, they just never get paid and there’s no way to collect. There is also no legislation to prevent people with violations from getting permits for new projects. The whole thing is a joke.
Hey- I can give the city a list of buildings in CHN they can charge $5000 a day to the owners for neglect.Add to the coffers, maybe make some lame landlord get off his butt and actually do something. A win-win.
