When the Jewish Press Building at 323 3rd Avenue hit the market with a $10 million price tag last year, the listing broker speculated that the buyer would likely be someone planning to jump on the residential bandwagon in Gowanus. That, of course, was before the famous canal was placed on the Superfund list and the two mega-developments planned for its shores were put on hold (or, in one case, cancelled). Now, if the whisper we just heard is correct, it looks like there won’t be anyone living at the Jewish Press Building nearby either. According to our source, it just went into contract with a storage company. Kind of a bummer, as far as we are concerned. Not exactly going to enhance the street life along that stretch.

  1. I agree it’s a bit of a bummer.. Not that I was hoping for anything “hip and trendy”, and certainly not high-end condos, but I think most of us around here like that 3rd ave’s street life is improving, and this is still part of a pretty barren stretch. But I have trouble believing that this building was ever going to be turned into residences – I mean.. look at it. I’ve heard people suggest a theater. Some kind of public space like that could have been cool for the neighborhood.

  2. Actually, Denton, if premier storage next door is full, I could see an expansion. They’ve already got the parking, security, office and trucks. We used them during our housing oddyssey and found they gave mroe value and were easier to deal with than U-Haul.
