Daily News columnist Errol Louis has a bone to pick with Brothers Moving & Storage — the business responsible for that giant yellow building on Atlantic Avenue. After a couple of disasters in his family’s brownstone, he had to move out all their belongings and stashed them at Brothers, the nearest storage facility to his home. He rented the largest available room for over $400 per month, but Brothers refused to give him a copy of their contract. Then, things got worse:

“Months later, I called three days before I wanted to get our stuff, but the facility manager, Frank Jones, said we had to give them 14 days’ notice — in writing — and that we would not be allowed to have a moving company get our belongings without written proof they had $2 million worth of liability insurance…

Spicing up his language with rudeness and profanity – the way certain kinds of people do when they work behind protective glass – Jones offered a quick way out of our predicament: We could give his guys an extra $600 cash (on top of the thousands we had already paid) to move our goods out.”

The extra fees and two-weeks’ notice suddenly became unnecessary when Louis mentioned his Daily News column, but he probably isn’t the only one who has been bullied by this company. If anyone has had a similarly awful experience with Brothers, Louis asks that you file a complaint with the city’s Department of Consumer Affairs online or by dialing 311.”Raising a fuss is the only way to stop the ripoff artists that prey on inner-city neighborhoods,” Louis writes. “Complaining about unscrupulous merchants isn’t just a personal matter – it’s a civic duty.”

  1. I moved my things into Brothers storage in late February. After paying one monthly storage bill, I just received a notice that the monthly fee was increasing by 40%! I called them and complained, and the employee and then manager got into a screaming match with me. Total bait and switch, but I’m not backing down, or paying more than initially agreed. Will keep you posted.

  2. My family used that awful storage facility before and it turned out to be a place of thieves. First I had my cellphone charging in the basement, when I went to retrieve it later it was misssing. I went to “Brothers” to complain and the woman being the glass defended her movers saying “my guys are honest and ethical”.I was so pissed off. Secondly they ruined the couch in storage with water damage from a leaky roof, but refused to reimburse us until we payed for it to be cleaned out of our own pocket. Never will I use them.

  3. Moshe’s Storage hasn’t returned the security deposit on my storage room and I left it spotless and never paid a bill late. It’s been months and I’ve made several calls to no avail. I think it’s better to use a national storage company because the smaller outfits like Moishe’s and Brothers seem to be run by theives.

  4. my wife and i hired them to move us around the corner (literally, we could have walked all of our stuff over but it would have taken forever). they showed up late with 4 very large men, took forever to move a 1 br worth of furniture, complained that our 2nd floor apt had extra steps because of the stoop and then complained more when our generous tip was deemed insufficient. on top of that they were very expensive for such a small move.

the next time we took a friend’s tip and hired some guys from chinatown. two tiny guys who couldn’t speak any english moved us in half the time and without complaints. AND they were cheaper to begin with. needless to say, they got a bigger tip than the brother’s movers.

  5. Thats sucks. I used them during our renovation and they seemed ok to me. Gave us a months free and we called them on a Thursday to say we were picking up our stuff on Sat. and they didn’t have a problem.

  6. what do you mean not a problem? if they look like, smell like and act like a thug then they’re a thug. how do you know your stuff is safe while it’s there if they act like this when you need to get it? I never used them and never will and would never recommend them…

  7. the exact same thing happen to us at that place several years ago. my husband wanted to get our things out, after our renovation, and were treated awfully as if we were criminals. in fact, i think that the people who work there are x-cons, not a problem, but they have the same “thug” mentality that they had in the big house. all we wanted were our belongings to move into our house.
