What a mess! Back in September, when the controversial plan to redevelop a 31-acre swath of Williamsburg known as the Broadway Triangle was on its way to approval, a coalition of 40 community groups sued the city for discrimination and failure to include the interests and input of much of the community in favor of the Hasidic population whose behind-the-scenes political influence (with heavy hitters like Assemblyman Vito Lopez) seems to know no bounds. Last week, according to Crain’s, a judge ruled in the plaintiffs’ favor and ordered the city to cough up certain documents and demographic info to support its decision to create such a high number of three- and four-bedroom apartments and to cap the building heights at eight stories, both of which play to the Hasidic community. The plan as it was approved is supposed to create 1,851 apartments, almost half of which would be affordable. The community groups want to see more smaller apartments.
