“This is a gardener’s delight,” sighed an elderly woman, before she and her friend counted to three and heaved a Hefty bag filled with compost into the trunk of her car. This past weekend at the Spring Creek Composting Facility (12720 Flatlands Ave), local residents were invited to take home unlimited amounts of free compost, a dark, crumbly material made of decomposed organic matter that helps improve soil health and provides essential nutrients to plants. If you’re looking for an organic way to boost your backyard tomato bounty, the compost give-away continues this coming weekend (5/18 and 5/19), from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring your own shovel and containers for the compost. We lined large flower pots with garbage bags and made it home without any spills. Check out more composting photos after the jump.
