In the interest of fairness, we have given Williamsburg developers so much grief that we felt obliged to point out the progress on Grand and Bedford. Of all the new places to go up, this looks the most acceptable so far. Once the requisite stainless steel appliances are installed, this may be kinda nice. Who knows where they are in the sales process? Guesses on prices?

  1. Scarano’s buildings are a mixed bag but they’re not bad compared to the godawfulness of Bricolage designs and others. I found the ex-scarano’s comments VERY interesting … how often is it that developers push for an ugly, overblown building over a simple modern facade ?

  2. This is a building by Scarano Architects. I know because I used to work for them. This building is a classic case of an architect bullied by the developer’s bad taste. Please keep up the critiques and stop buying this crap. This is the only way developers will wake up to what people in this neighborhood want. Right now they wholeheartedly believe we desire colonial or even neo-classical buildings.

  3. Halden,
We don’t think anyone was drooling over this place, but compared to some of the other new builds, we thought it looked okay. Are there any other new construction developments in the Burg you think are better?

  4. This one is up there in my pantheon of ugly Williamsburg buildings. It would be overly generous to call this post-Modern, since I don’t think it has a style at all. C’mon – this is a loft type building with double-height windows tarted up with some cheap pre-cast concrete trim and a ridulous pediment (the least they could have done was given it a chippendale top). A neo-Colonial loft? Take away the pre-cast and the pediment, and at least the building is what it is – with all that stuff its a confused mess architectural bits which is out context with its time and place. Like eh said, if you’re building modern, build modern.
