Atlantic Avenue Shell Station: Re-Open or Re-Develop?

In November, the DOB issued a permit to the Shell station on Atlantic and Henry for the removal of three 4,000-gallon gasoline storage tanks. The Brooklyn Eagle has a story today saying that the old tanks will be replaced this month and the gas station will reopen. That could be the case, but there’s also some new information not in The Eagle story which could suggest otherwise: It turns out that the 7,785-square-foot lot was sold for a cool $2,590,000 just two weeks ago. That comes out to $136 for each of the 18,918 square feet that the new owner is allowed to build on the site; the address on the deed leads back to a company called America’s Choice Mortgage Co. in Flushinga name that sounds a lot more like a company planning to develop the site than operate it as a gas station. No new building plans have been filed yet so anything is possible. And for those keeping score at home, the contract was entered into post-Lehman. GMAP P*Shark
Agreed that it was convenient for gas – and one of the guys there was really helpful one day when my sister drove in to visit and her car needed an emergency jump before she could leave (of course, being a friendly guy who didn’t charge a pregnant woman in distress is probably grounds for dismissal). I used to fill up my Avis rentals or Zipcars there before returning them. I think there are still a few fill-up stations on Tillary, near that McDonalds – a Hess I think? Or is that gone now? Otherwise, Hamilton under the BQE is the closest, but it’s so inconvenient.
However, given that I live literally 2 doors away from it, I would be happy to see it go. There’s something unnerving about living so close to a lot that is filled with copious amounts of flammable liquids! Plus, they park all their cars (and their customer’s cars) at all the meters on the South side of Atlantic Ave and leave them there all day – from 7:30am till closing time. I watch them walking up and down the block all day putting muni-meter tickets in all the windows – sometimes 7 or 8 cars. Those are parking spots that some of the rest of us who live here would like to use on occasion. I’m not even sure what they do in that regard is legal, even if they keep feeding the meter. Perhaps I should look into that.
while the gas was convenient, i stopped frequenting this business after being shafted on a repair job when i first moved to the hood.
i highly recommend david and donald at urban classics.
It’s a rather convenient service station to have there, esp. on those days, with hours left, the little sticker in my window suddenly indicates that the inspection was due. Those guys always claimed that new wiper blades were required to pass inspection, but that was an extra 20 bucks I was willing to pay for the 1 day service and three block walk.
my goodness BoD! I was pulling your leg, but that’s pretty impressive
you must be a serious gearhead! thanks again!
“…the Mobil Service Station. They didn’t have gas pumps, but i used to get my car serviced there”
BoD
That Mobile was the best. In it’s heyday it had like 8 pumps, the 4/5 bay garage, and a car wash. That place was great. Nicest bunch of owners/operators too.
They closed and re-opened a few times before finally getting the heave-ho.
It’s a sad day when it takes serious effort ad searching to buy gas in Brooklyn, but can look at myriad unfinished construction projects, vacant developments, and a plethora of Stop Work Orders…

BoD – can I get your map of all the gas stations in South Brooklyn (and the cost/gal. at each)?
much thanks!
“Call it lazy, or nitpicking or whatever, but I like having a gas station right there.”
Me, too. It was pretty convenient coming off the bridge.
Christopher – I agree. First it was the Hess Station up the street. The Hess was really spacious, and convenient, not to mention cheapest gas in the nabe. Then across the street the Mobil Service Station. They didn’t have gas pumps, but i used to get my car serviced there. Poof, gone! Now this Sunoco station. Only other options are way down by BBT or 3rd/4th ave. SUCKS!
