We were a little confused when a sign advertising rentals at 50 Bridge Street popped up along Jay Street in Dumbo a couple of weeks ago—and not just because we had questions about the legality of said sign. We had been under the impression that 50 Bridge Street was a condo building. The confusion was cleared up when someone much more knowledgeable than ourselves pointed out that the Guttmans had not received a C of O for the two lower floors when the building went condo back in 2004; evidently they just got the go-ahead from DOB earlier this year and have decided to rent out the units. Seems like there are tons of illegal billboards around, but the only time I have seen anyone get up in arms about it is CB2 (GV) complaining…frequently.
It could be legal–but generally you can’t just throw up a big banner on the side of a building. DOB has certain restrictions: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dob/html/violations/signs.shtml
Umm… why is the sign not legal exactly?
