Annual Surfing Contest Rolls Into the Rockaways on Saturday

The boardwalk is no longer there, but the spirit never left, and the waves are still gnarly. This Saturday, surfers from around the East Coast will head to the Rockaways for the Rock Stock and Barrels Festival. Now in its seventh year, this Atlantic Surfing Federation-sanctioned contest will take place while vendors peddle their products and eight bands play music on the beach. This is the first competition after Superstorm Sandy, and attendance is expected to be high. Since parking is always difficult, organizers recommend that attendees take public transportation or drive early to the municipal lot near Beach 94th Street.
