Some good news for some homeowners in the Rockaways after Sandy

Some homeowners in the Rockaways area might find it worthwhile to look into an option to protect their homes from the next giant storm – raising their home to the base flood elevation or higher. Dan Mundy Jr., president of the Broad Channel Civic Association, says this little-known provision could be of great help to some homeowners in the flooded Rockaways neighborhood. In his words, those “who file Increased Cost of Compliance claims through the National Flood Insurance Program can receive up to $30,000 to help raise structures above the flood elevation level.” Definitely worth looking into.

36 Hours in Queens, NY

The NY Times has decided to come to Queens to spend some time here and enjoy some of what it has to offer – food, culture, entertainment. Check out their list (which contains some of our favorites, including Spa Castle, Cheburechnaya, the Louis Armstrong House Museum, and MOMI).

Far Rockaway Beach Bungalow Historic District – you’re a star!

The Far Rockaway Beach Bungalow Historic District has been nominated by the NY State Board for Historic Preservation to be in the New York and national registers of historic places! They survived Hurricane Sandy, “relatively unscathed” (here’s to solid construction) and if the nomination goes through the area could become a historic landmark. This part of the Rockaways in particular is Beach 24th, Beach 25th, and Beach 26th Streets between between Seagirt Avenue and the Atlantic.

MLS rumors… could it be?!?

Over on Bloomberg they are suggesting that “Manchester City, the English Premier League team owned by Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan” might be awarded the MLS francise that is (most likely) coming to Queens! Apparently “three people with direct knowledge of the talks” say it’s true. It would be called New York City Football Club, and soccer star David Beckham could have a role. Manchester City denies it all. $100 million is involved, too. It’s an intriguing idea, that is for sure.

It’s the end of the world as we know it

Well, tomorrow is supposedly the end of the world, at least according to the Mayans and some New Age folks, but we are pretty confident that we will wake up tomorrow and find the world as it has been. We had a little fun with it and asked our readers what their plans are. All in good fun, and here are a couple of answers.
