Just another day at the office! In the above photo, a professional stuntman performs a “high fall” from a scissors lift near Kaufman Astoria Studios. Usually these daredevils do this kind of stuff for a living, but on Sunday, they’ll take risks solely for the public’s enrichment during New York on Location, a celebration of film production in the Big Apple. Presented by the Museum of the Moving Image, Theatrical Teamsters Local 817, and Kaufman Astoria Studios, this family-friendly, outdoor street fair will offer attendees the rare opportunity to explore more than 20 movie trailers and trucks and chat with movie professionals about what they do on set. Some trucks will feature star dressing rooms, while others will contain props, cameras, wardrobes, and special effects. More details and another image on jump page.
New York on Location will include:
- Special weather effects, such as rain and snow, presented by Woodside-based EFEX Rentals;
- Makeup artists and hair stylists demonstrating applications for everything from a glamour look to cuts and bruises;
- Award-winning stunt performers executing high falls, street fighting, and stunt driving. They include Frank Alfano Jr. (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles); Drivers East (Goodfellas, The Dark Knight Rises, The Wolf of Wall Street, Blue Bloods) performing car stunts; fight choreographer Chris Colombo (The Bourne Ultimatum, The Following, Elementary); Chris Barnes (Blue Bloods, Men in Black 3, The Bourne Ultimatum) carrying out high falls; stunt coordinator Tim Gallin (The Departed, Bourne Ultimatum); Tony Guida (The Blacklist, Gotham); and Chazz Menendez (Limitless, Non-Stop);
- A look inside a “camera car,” a rigged vehicle that supports filming scenes in autos;
- Treat trucks, which are specialized catering vans that provide Friday treats to those working on movie sets. (They will sell food during the event.) Vendors will include Papaya King, Jiannetto’s Pizza & Catering, Fun Buns NYC, Brooklyn Popcorn, and Andy’s Italian Ice and Espresso Bar;
- A deluxe star dressing room, known in the industry as a “triple pop-out” trailer; and
- Honey wagons, aka the restrooms to the stars. They will be available for public use.
Details: New York on Location, the gated backlot at Kaufman Astoria Studios (current production home to Orange Is the New Black, Nurse Jackie, Sesame Street, and other productions), vicinity of 36th Street between 34th and 35th avenues, Kaufman Arts District, September 21st, 11 am to 5 pm, free.
P.S. New York on Location took place once in 2007, so this is the second event. If there is enough popular demand, it might become an annual attraction.
