Has Williamsburg lost its luster, or is Gavin McInnes just cashing in? The Vice Media co-founder — who left the company in 2007 citing “creative differences” — has listed his luxe 1,300-square-foot penthouse for $2.499 million, as first noted by Curbed.
That’s more than double what he paid for the pad a mere five years ago.
The three-bedroom, two-bath home at 80 Metropolitan Avenue in Williamsburg has two expansive terraces and views of the East River’s bridges and Manhattan beyond. For an extra $80,000, they’ll even throw in a private parking spot.
McInnes bought the home in 2011 for $1.155 million.
Only the longest of Brownstoner readers will remember that before this luxury condo building rose, 80 Metropolitan was the site of the very cool-looking Old Dutch Mustard plant, demolished in 2006.
Williamsburg has long been Vice’s home base; in 2015 the company left its North 11th Street headquarters to head to a new space on Kent Avenue and South 2nd Street, formerly the home of indie music venues Glasslands, Death By Audio and 285 Kent.
Ah, the remarkable rate of change in this crazy city. Indie music venues are now indie media conglomerates’ offices. And where mustard-making machines once pumped out pungent condiments, prices have more than doubled in just a few years.
No word yet where McInnes is headed next.
The building does have some nice amenities — check out that pool.
