The former Engine 212 firehouse on Wythe Avenue between 8th and 9th streets in Williamsburg will become a town hall and community center. According to the Eagle, construction on the “People’s Firehouse,” which was decommissioned in 2003, is slated to start in the coming weeks. Local groups Neighbors Allied for Good Growth and People’s Firehouse will oversee the construction and operation of the center. The city is covering two-thirds of the construction costs. “Someday in the not-very-distant future, the Northside Town Hall Community and Cultural Center will be a hub of activity for all of North Brooklyn—a place for families and kids, a place where organizations and nonprofits can find affordable office and meeting space, and a place for local artists to exhibit their work,” Borough President Marty Markowitz said in a statement yesterday.
