Joel Wiener, landlord of the the historic Riverside Apartments in Brooklyn Heights, has been raising the hackles of tenants by ignoring a 2000 state order to restore the building’s courtyard from its current usage as a parking lot. Only recently has the rationale for his foot-dragging come to light: On April 25, Landmarks will review his proposal to turn the site into a school atop and 165-car garage. The head of the tenants association of the 1890 building, which was noted at the time as huge step forward in urban living for the working class, calls Wiener’s actions “abhorent” and “outlandish”.

  1. Landmarks better act quickly on this one. It’s frightening to think that this gem could really be in such danger.

Just out of curiosity, have any groups in Brooklyn ever picketed buildings/sites where real atrocities are happening to buildings of architectural/historical importance that landmarks has yet to protect, if they ever intend to at all?
