One house on the South side of Albemarle is in the middle of a major make-over while another one with great bones, at 145 Argyle Road, could use one.

  1. No houses on Albermarle were recently resided with Aluminum Siding. The house in question recently painted their circa 1960’s Danny DeVito “Tin Men” aluminum siding. It was actually quite pervasive in PPS, but over the past 10 years quite a few nice restorations have taken place with replacement cedar shingles or clapboard. Must’ve been quite a salesman working the neighborhood!

  2. just curious what happens if you don’t comply with landmarks? as I’m taking a look at Shahn’s project I’m thinking to myself who wants to go through all that and why? what do you get or what don’t u get if you comply? do they arrest you or something? haha

  3. Hum, well then maybe they just replaced the siding then. This is the house on the corner of Argyle? I am pretty sure they already had Aluminum on it.
I wondered about that, if a home is landmark and it already has Aluminum siding on it that was grandfather in, can they again reside it again?
    Any one know?

  4. That house was not recently sided with Aluminum, it was just recently paitned.
Some landmark areas have aluminum siding that was grandfather in. As far as that other home, I believe Landmarks is making them keep that front..

  5. The top house is not an original PPS home – it’s one of three mid-century shoeboxes built on the site of what was originally a huge Victorian home. Don’t know if it burned down or was just torn down. The current owner is adding another story and rebuilding most of the house. Landmarks was sort of confused as to how to handle this situation. I don’t know if they are making the owners keep the ugly brick facade on the first floor or what, but it seems to be staying. I think landmarks should have demanded that the house be rebuilt in a style more compatible with the rest of the neighborhood.

Speaking of landmarks, brownstoner, did you get a snap of the formerly gorgeous Queen Anne on Albemarle that was recently clad in aluminum siding? Funny that, given PPS is a landmarked neighborhood. The owners had a request for the siding in with the Landmarks Commission for years. A mystery to me as to how they ever got permission. Siding was definitely a mistake.
