Flatbush Houses [Don Wiss]
I’ve lived here for over 20 years and I can tell you that the Q train is unbelievely reliable and quick. I get on at Beverly Road and take it to Times Square – 30 minutes is the usual. You can also take the Express Bus into Manhattan if you prefer. Very easy commute.
Just a little geography – These houses are all in Prospect Park South, except for the onion dome, which is in neighboring Beverley Square West. Just a small sampling, although some of the grandest, of the over 3000 homes that comprose the Victorian Flatbush houses. Large, lavish homes of this type can also be found in Ditmas Park (proper)and along Glenwood Road and Ocean Avenue. There are also many extremely charming and whimsical homes in Beverley Square East, Beverley Square West, and West Midwood, sandwhiched between the more garden variety Victorians. I’m planning to do a photo tour of these once I get my new camera.
I live quite close to the Q train stop at Cortelyou Road. My two Manhattan stops tend to be Union Square and Canal. Twenty minutes door to door. My husband has to get up to Grand Central, which means changing trains, etc… But still, it’s beats the F from Park Slope, which was our previous line.

Love the Q not a fan of the B. Have used them for about 4 years (the B was moved over to the Flatbush Ave line from 4th Ave.) B is for Bad (doesnt run at night or weekends either) and Q is for Quick..except for the weekend when it can go local, express and go no further than Times Square. Otherwise it is great. Today I left for work at 6am from Prospect Park station and was there (54th and Broadway) at 6:25am…no lie. It is FAST!!
what a weired web page (Don Wiss) – how do you find that stuff brownstoner?
Beautiful homes, simply beautiful. We love driving through these neighborhoods.
Lovely!
Gotta speak up for the B/Q. Been riding it back and forth everyday for the past year from Newkirk stop in Ditmas to 34th street. Very rarely have a problem- like maybe 4 trips out of hundreds that I can remember being at all annoyed. I was worried about the commute before we moved but not anymore. Besides, there’s always the Express Bus which gets me here in about the same time. In any case, having used it almost every day for the past year, I certainly wouldn’t say that the B/Q service has deteriorated in the last several months. All in all, I have been pleasantly surprised by it’s reliability.
Absolutely beautiful houses. Absolutely beautiful neighborhood. For those of us unlucky enough to work in midtown Manhattan, is my experience with the B and Q trains — extraordinarily slow, unexplained delays, taking forever to cross the Manhattan Bridge — unusual or par for the course. I’ve been told that service used to be better but has deteriorated in the last several months. It’s the biggest downside to living in Victorian Flatbush.
