The Village Voice, ever the friend of the struggling real estate developer, reports on how the $4 million supposedly set aside by the City to help businesses in Greenpoint and Williamsburg displaced by the residential rezoning is not getting to the folks who need it. Take, for example, Herb Engler, the owner of Penn State Fabricators at 124 Newton Street in Greenpoint. For 36 years, he has run his metal-cutting business in a 25-by-100-foot, one-story brick machine shop that was recently sold to a developer. Engler claims to be unable to afford the $50,000 it would cost to relocate his equipment to another site. And, surprise, surprise, the City hasn’t exactly been throwing money at him. We have to admit, it sounds like he’s exactly the type of guy the $4 million was earmarked for.
