A big poster has gone up advertising a new daycare facility in a 6th Avenue building between Garfield and Carroll. The business is called Daddy’s Daycare, and the poster and advertisements outside the building make it look like a pretty homespun affair. An online advertisement says it’s for kids between 6 weeks and 12 years old and reveals a slogan: “May the Formula Be With You!!!” GMAP

  1. Dear Marion G,

We are sorry that you feel so strongly and negatively about our new business, but I think you may be mistaking and confusing a few facts.

We are a licensed daycare facility by the NYC Department of Health and Bureau of Daycares. There are different types of licenses for daycares, but the one that we carry is a Group Family Daycare license. Which allows to practice this type of business from your own residence. This means, that anyone can have a daycare in their home (even in a 2 bedroom apartment, as long as 1 bedroom is dedicated strictly for daycare). Therefore, a residential lease (and not a commercial lease) is required. On the other hand, a Daycare Center would need a different type of license and a commercial location.

It‘s not an easy process to obtain a license that we carry and therefore there is thorough investigation, background check, inspections and etc. that are done and have to be complied with. Such issues as egress, sanitary, overcrowding and fire protection are all covered by the NYC Department of Health and have to be addressed as well as resolved before the license is issued. The NYC Dept of Health requires fire detectors, extinguishers, evacuation plan and other fire hazard prevention equipment around the entire facility. The Fire Department also inspects the facility on regular basis and notates these requirements on the log which is kept in a visible place.

The issues that you bring up, are all the issues that were already handled by the NYC Department of Health and Bureau of Daycares and we have complied with all of their requirements and regulations.

We understand your concern, but there is nothing illegal that has been done by us. Our main goal and concern is the safety of the children that we care for. Therefore, we would not put any child in a dangerous and hazardous situation.

We have opened our daycare with the intentions to benefit the community.

Should you have any additional concerns, or wish to discuss this matter further, feel free to contact us.

    Very truly yours,

    Daycare

  2. The entire situation AT 256 6th Avenue is ILLEGAL!! Lots of kids in a zoned unit where only medical facilities are permissible. The most recent C of O lists medical facilities on the “ground” floor unit with two dwelling units on the first floor in conjunction with the medical unit. Residential units above that floor. Egress, sanitary, overcrowding and fire protection issues immediately come to mind. This is not a situation where an individual babysits for a few children, but rather a commercial enterprise. The last thing we need is a tragedy to occur from such a situation. Public info classifies this as a 5 family residence with medical facility owned by investors named “Franton Associates” self managed at 29-27 41st Street – Fl. #2, L.I.City 11101. I’ll see if I can email them! I’ll notify the fire department as well.
BOTTOM LINE: DON’T LET YOUR CHILDREN STAY HERE!!

  3. Actually, the ad says 6 weeks to 5 years. I don’t know if Gabby misread it or it changed in the interim. Even so, that’s still a very big spread for what looks like a one-room operation. Are they really going to have 4-year-olds tearing around with 18-month-old toddlers and 10-month-old crawlers underfoot? And what about naptime? Infants need lots of naps, toddlers usually one or two, and pre-schoolers sometimes none. How do they intend to balance the disparate needs for quiet time and running-around time in that space?

  4. this also comes across almost as sketchy as if i were to have an organic bakesale in my building’s lobby. i dont like the name at all for various reasons. the sign is ghetto as hell, and if the ages listed are not a mistake, eh i dont know. if it’s legit, cool i wish them luck.

    *rob*

  5. The 12 years doesn’t phase me (wtf do you do with your 12 year old in the summer?), but the 6 WEEKS does. Most places we looked at were 3 months or 6 months at the youngest.
