Baluchi's: Slow Train Coming
Calling it “one of the longest running restaurant construction sagas we’ve ever seen,” Gowanus Lounge today offers encouraging news that the two-year construction saga at the Baluchi’s-to-be on Fifth Avenue between 2nd and 3rd Streets in the Slope is “making progress.” We took a look inside the Indian restaurant back in April.

Maybe it’s just me but I’ve always wondered why an Indian place has a name like Baluchi”s I know John Belushi was Albanian and I understand the Balochi people are Iranian but where does this slightly different name, Baluchi come from? Anyone?
prodigal son, maybe it came out the wrong way. while not the capital, theres a large indian population and seems that you can walk into tons of mom&pops and get excellent cheap food, whereas most of the places ive been to in manhattan/bklyn were weak. perhaps im just going to the wrong places (except jackson hts and a few on lex.), but still personal experience is that theres a greater ratio of good to bad places in socal than around here. as you were.
not looking for a coastal war here but um…goldie.
Socal is not the capital of great Indian food. Lots of great food there but
there is plenty here in NY, as well as “Socal”.
That is not a diss on Socal as much as the way you predicated your culinary perspective.
Now if you would have said ” coming from London”, I’d not say a word.
That being said, Baluchis is a chain. Average to just above average.
coming from socal and knowing great indian food, i ate at baluchis once and was disgusted. people here seem to like it, wondering if i just had a bad meal or baluchis is just a typical caucasian desi dinner.
Hey, Baluchi’s Gotta Serve Somebody, Fjorder!
On Smith and Degraw, there was a Baluchis that left after terrible business. Now its Provence en Boite. I guess 5th is a better prospect for them, or lower rent.
I think Star of India on Fifth Ave is good, especially for take out. Baluchi’s will be a nice addition though!
Awesome! I like Baluchi’s and the Indian food in Park Slope at the present time sucks big time.
nice Dylan reference, ‘stoner.
