We were pleased to see a police car standing guard at Putnam and Grand on our way home from the office on Friday; and we gather that they’ve assumed a similar position at various times since the shooting two weeks ago. Of course, we haven’t seen them there at night. Nor have they been there in the mornings when we walk past on our way to work. In fact, on Friday morning we asked a cop who was standing guard on the busy subway platform full of dangerous businessmen and women on their way to work why he wasn’t over on Putnam and Grand instead. He muttered something unintelligible and then said something about how there might be a greater presence there when the new class of recruits comes aboard in July. Hmmmm.

In the meantime, there is some reason for hope. On June 21 at 7 p.m.. Letitia James, DA Charles Hynes and the 88th Precinct Captain will host a town hall meeting at 966 Fulton Street to specifically address the “quality of life issues” at Grand and Putnam. It’s unusual to get this line-up of higher-ups for such a local forum so we hope there will be broad attendance from the community–not just the block. Does this represent a change in attitude from the political and law enforcement leaders who have ignored the magnitude of the problem in the past? We can only hope. We also hope that they come to the meeting with more than pat answers about how they are working on long-term solutions with undercover cops and how there aren’t enough resources. If so, the members of the audience (aka the voters) won’t be buying it. As we’ve said before, this is going to become a single-issue point of accountability for all the leaders in the neighborhood. Let’s hope they rise to the occasion.
Will The Cops Show Up Now? [Brownstoner]

  1. Anon 5:45–I’ve gone to the 88th precinct meetings many times and have never found them helpful…the same old pat answers and a lot of shout-outs and congrats to pols who happen to show up. Don’t assume people have not tried to work this issue.

  2. can someone please tell me what this murder is all about? i heard something about police activity on memorial day but none of my neighbors on cambridge could fill me in.
i also have not seen any mention of this important meeting except on ‘stoner.

  3. crouchback: your comment about the borough president is a load of crap. the only thing that fat man cares about is development in brooklyn, not about the people in clinton hill. if the drug dealers were building houses then perhaps, otherwise, that fat man is nothing but a useless blob!

  4. how nice that letitia james, the 88th captain and charles hynes will be there. she does nothing, he does nothing and all he does is prosecute. where is RAY KELLY, the police chief, the only person who seems to get the job done? until he shows up NOTHING at all will change!!! look at how long they have all been around and what has been done to these hoodlums who terrorize this neighborhood and make us feel unsafe.

  5. Well if its more cops that you want, you have to write to the Police Commissioner. Flood him with letters from the community. Each of you should write him individual letters. Maybe he will get the picture. Its not the Captains, the precinct council Presidents, the DA or any of the politians fault that we don’t have enough resources. It has to come from Ray Kelly. We often direct our anger on the wrong people.

  6. There is something about the internet which makes people contentious. 5:45 – why is having a special meeting after a MURDER surprising. And why is it bad. Couldn’t you just encourage people to attent the regular precinct meeting rather than deriding them from being interested in this one? Itsawrap are you really saying you don’t see the men selling drugs at Putnam and Grand?
All that said, I think a neighborhood watch with people walking around would have more effect than cops on one particular corner. But too scary for most of us, including me.
