New Look and Name for New College Restaurant

The boundaries between neighborhoods can be fluid (Is the Argyle in Park Slope or Gowanus? Is the new Cobble Hill Coffee Shop in Carroll Gardens?), but we’re pretty sure that the diner formerly known as New College Restaurant, at 224 4th Avenue, isn’t in the South Slope. Still, after renovations, the restaurant re-opened as, well, “South Slope.” Here’s a description from Brooklynian: “They have broken through all the dim outer walls on that corner and created a lovely open space with sliding glass doors, similar to the look Beso had on Union and 5th (before is closed last year). Menus still lay claim to their history of ‘serving Park Slope for 25 years,’ but from the looks of it the owner just decided to revamp the spot with a perhaps hipper name and contemporary look.”

The owners are great guys. They see the hood changing all around them and as smart businesmen they adapt. As a former Gowanus “motel” manager they were always gracious to our guests when we refered them and weekend breakfasts were always packed with locals and are greeted by name. Even Daisys which we love doesn’t remember our names or say welcome back. New College always does.
If you want old school then go down the block to Union Cafe which hasnt changed in years.

Please Brownstoner, don’t feature my restaurant or Boutique, it’s surely the kiss of death.
Looks lame?
Overpriced?
Is there anything that the people on Brownstoner wont complain about? apparently not.
A (local) business, upgrades the look of his restaurant (and basically keeps prices the same btw), and makes it more pedestrian friendly (opening it up to the street)
and all the curmudgeons here can do is complain about the name and non-existent price increases.
Let me predict a possible future…..annoying brownstoners boycott the place because it looks too clean and shiny and doesnt ‘respect’ its gowanus location and the other long time patrons, feel uncomfortable by the new decor and decamp to another dingy diner on 3rd ave. Place goes out of business….3mo later – amazing corner location attracts Dunkin Donuts …. Brownstoners complain of suburbanization and demand that a local merchant/restaurateur open up!
Lets hope that motel guests in gowanus and more rationale thinking people ignore the stupid views reflected here.
A lot of these awning signs get misspelled. Perhaps it was supposed to be “South Slop”
I’ve seen a lot of newcomers not-yet oriented, and confuse”uphill” for “north” in the slope; could the confusing name come from the diner being at the bottom of the hill?
Besides that, this building is without a doubt in Gowanus. Everyone knows where Gowanus is except the realtors, since they make sure it’s omitted from their neighborhood maps unless you’re looking for industrial buildings.
ha
well hello and im glad you registered
sorry about that santa.
just irks me when disparaging comments are made off the cuff. enough to actually register 😉
but, agreed the restaurant is in no way south of anything slopish.
