Forgotten NY Strolls Down Broadway in the Burg

Forgotten NY revisits a neighborhood near and dear to our hearts–Broadway in South Williamsburg where, FNY notes, “the Vanderbilts looked across the river to Manhattan from their mansions, the Pratts heated their homes, and the Havemeyers put sugar in their coffee.” The survey reveals a few kinks in FNY’s usually encyclopedic knowledge and shows that Kevin hasn’t been reading his Brownstoner as closely as he should! Those paying attention will remember that the “coral-shaped decorative stonework” on the facade of the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center is called vermiculation and that the fortress-like building on South 6th Street actually began life as an Opera House. Kevin has answered so many questions for us over the past year, we’re just glad we could return the favor.
