house“No Judgements” can really be the Crunch founders’ philosophy, now that the company has agreed to be acquired by private-equity firm Angelo, Gordon. In what appears to be a larger roll-up strategy, the investment firm is also taking over Sports and Fitness Ventures–which owns gyms in Park Slope and Fort Greene–and installing its founder, Marc Tascher, as head of the whole operation. The Crunch brand will soon adorn the facades of these two locations and, we hear, Brooklyn members will be able to use Manhattan locations.

  1. I am starting to hate Crunch. I signed up for a month to month plan at $69- when I joined that were bragging about all the coming improvements. When those improvements finally came 5 months later, I get a letter raising my fees by $15 a month.

Not only that but their contracts state that 30-day notification is required to raise fees – Ft. Greene customers were given less than a WEEK.

After lots of false info and BS from their office, I decided to cancel.

And guess what, I just got charged $84 (straight out of my checking account!) for a membership I cancelled.

I’m now getting my exercise running back and forth to the bank and yelling at them on the phone.

    AVOID AVOID AVOID!!

go to a local yoga studio or the park slope Y, anything but a commercial gym.

  2. well, there’s currently a letter-writing an email campaign to restore employees who were immediately cut from the Park Slope gym upon the name change so, to answer the question as whether the gyms are better, the answer thus far is an unequivical no.

  3. I’m sure we’ll be able to use the Manhattan locations but they’ll definitely be adding more fees! There’s no way they’re going to give us that extra amenity without getting paid for it.

  4. I left Crunch to join ft. greene sports club. the place was very overcrowded before it bought crunch and i can’t imagine how awful it will be once the two clubs have been fully integrated.
a consolation is the new long island university sports complex, complete with pool, that’s opening soon near ashland and dekalb.
