In a move that must have Bloomberg et al in a fury, the owner of the site that used to house the Thunderbolt rollercoaster indicated that he was leaning towards selling it to Thor Equities rather than the city, reports The Post; the acquisition would give Thor control of most of the land from Keyspan Park to the Cyclone. Why? The city’s offers weren’t even close to Thor’s $91 million bid. Photo by dolomite73.
Although I agree that the City shouldn’t be spending 100 mill on “entertainment” right now, Thor (or any developer) shouldn’t be able to run roughshod over the people in this city – Coney Island in particular – by taking away public space. The amusement area and beach beyond it belong to everyone. How does one put a price on that?
Thor Equities is banking on Mayor Bloomberg’s successor to change the site’s existing zoning to permit the construction of condominiums and other non-amusement park structures. This is why Thor Equities is willing to pay far more than the site’s appraised value. It is imperative that everyone who would like Coney Island to be developed as a world-class amusement park be aware of Thor Equities perfidious agenda. The City holds the “zoning” trump card, but we must remain vigilant or Coney Island’s heart and soul will go the way of Ebbets Field.
as much i hate thor equities, i dont think the city should be giving 100 million dollars for a dinky roller coaster. there is a great bus from port authority that takes you right to Great Adventure in jersey.
