Before his premature death last year, one of prolific blogger Bob Guskind’s favorite topics was the abyssmal state of the Coney Island boardwalk. As Gowanus Lounge reported at the time, the Parks Department began working on the rebuilding of the boardwalk back in February of 2009. When we hit Coney this past weekend, we checked in the progress and got some details about the project. From the posted sign: “The existing hardwood timbers and decking will be replaced by a combination of colored and textured pre-cast concrete slabs and new, sustainably-harvested wood decking.” There’s a rendering of the design on the jump.   1. Just got back from spending the afternoon at Coney. Under the Boardwalk is long gone. It’s not a traditional boardwalk anymore, just concrete slabs with wood atop. Remember when the sand was so low beneath the elevated Boardwalk that the Coney island Polar Bears clubhouse was under the boardwalk? Not that long ago.

  2. It would be nice to see what they are talking about. The boardward now is so bad, it’s sad. Nails sticking up, wood not in good shape. I can imagine that some combination of concrete and wood could work, but we don’t know how much of each and how…
