An hour after Barack Obama becomes the 44th President of the United States today, New York’s Department of City Planning will unveil its plan to make over Coney Island. The topic has been prominently featured in news accounts for much of the past couple of years, as the City, developer Thor Equities and the preservationists have fought, almost always publicly, about what the new Coney Island should look like. Here are a few components of the city’s plan from today’s Daily News: 19 blocks to be rezoned, $2.5 billion budget, height limit of 27 stories, creation of “Wonder Wheel Way” to connect the ferris wheel, Parachute Jump and Cyclone, 4,500 new apartments (20 percent affordable), 800 hotel rooms. As The Post points out, the city’s plan would likely mean the end to Nathan’s Famous restaurant. The seven-month ULURP process will include input from the community board and the borough president’s office before returning to City Planning. Of course, as Gothamist points out, the city will have to get a deal done for Thor’s land for any of this to become a reality. Update: Gowanus Lounge has renderings and debunks the Nathan’s angle here.

  1. “the city’s plan would likely mean the end to Nathan’s Famous restaurant.”

WHAT??? This plan ALREADY sucks badly. If there’s a single authentic thing left (except for the Wonder Wheel and Cyclone) at poor Coney, it’s Nathan’s. Unconscionable. Coney has been slowly withering away for decades, but this is really the end of the line.

  2. You know, this is JUST the sort of foolishness a city on the brink of financial collapse needs to be involving itself in. A multi-billion dollar project that will go way over budget and won’t be finished anywhere near on time — if ever. Why don’t we just complete the charade and hand management of this plan to the MTA.

  3. The Coney Island this is so GOD Damn disgusting!! I make me sick to think how they destroyed a neighborhood and Amusement Park! I hope Joe Shitt dies!

    The What

Someday this war is gonna end..

  4. I thought the City told Joe Sitt “No” to apartments and hotels? It makes no sense to me that Atlantic Yards will have a higher density than Coney island and the city keeps pushing that development that everyone else thinks needs a total redesign…the city is almost schizophrenic when it comes to somethings….
