Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill House Tour Recap?
We haven’t heard a single thing about the Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill House Tour last weekend. Did any of you go? How was it?

Anon 4:46pm — Just to clarify, I know that the Pratt mansions are not “college buildings”, but I meant that they were now used as such, and not as a family’s home. I enjoyed the Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill tour precisely because I wanted to see how families lived in brownstones, and I wasn’t interested in seeing just finely restored beautiful detail. For that reason, the funeral home on the tour, for all it’s glory, held very little appeal.
I really enjoyed the Carroll Gdns tour too. Agree with the 2:02pm poster that these were real people’s homes not glitzy show houses. The architect’s renovation on Sackett west of Smith was a terrific use of the space — elegant and minimal. The modern reno of the other Sackett St house (further east) wasn’t high end but I really admired the vision and how they had transformed a smaller, potentially pokey house into a lively, light-filled family home. On the 2nd fl they had a large open landing surrounding the new, central staircase that was outfitted with a desk and computer station. The kids’ bedrooms were in front and the parent’s behind. The kids were all hanging around the computer having fun. On the top floor (3 storey house) was a loft-like kitchen/sitting/dining area. Nice! Also fun on the tour was seeing some of the great views these houses have of lower Manhattan and all the wonderfully deep front yards. Hey, IMHO it was neighborhoody and cosy in the best tradition of Brooklyn house tours.
The Pratt mansions are not old college buildings.

10:46,
I’m wondering what you mean by “cheap modern” and “total modernist”?
My original comment was re-posted, but I wanted to say again that I thought the homes were lovely. Not everyone who buys a brownstone can afford the extra million dollars to “gut” it that I see posted here as estimates for high-end renovations. Families with kids lived in all the houses, and I, for one, enjoyed seeing how they used the space, and how comfortable and livable it seemed. If you were expecting showcase houses, perhaps this wasn’t your tour, but from what I read about the Clinton Hill tour, it involved mainly seeing some finely restored college buildings that are no longer real homes. I would have disappointed by that kind of tour.
it would be a sad world if people couldn’t express their opinions. i don’t see any mean-spiritedness, only an opinion. it will wash once enough people post their experiences, providing they were good ones.
really is the downside of the web. In past we gossiped in person, now we do it in writing. Where and when are the next set of housetours this summer. BTW went on a house tour in Inman Park, Atlanta. Lovely old victorian neighborhood with great spirit.
These mean-spirited comments are exactly the reason why no on wants their house on a “House Tour.” Who would willingly put themselves/their home out there for rude comments?
