Empty no more! Another long-vacant storefront on Montague Street is showing signs of life. When Brownstoner walked past just the other day, we saw that a UMD Urgent Care will soon occupy 109 Montague.
The location was previously a Crumbs cupcake shop. The bakery closed abruptly in June of 2014 just before the chain filed for bankruptcy. For a year, the storefront languished.
UMD is a New York-based medical care provider with three other locations — in Union Square, Flushing, and Williamsburg. According to their website, they’re open seven days a week and welcome walk-ins. No word yet on when the urgent care is set to open.
With the closing of the Long Island City Hospital in May of 2014, some neighborhood residents lamented the loss of nearby medical facilities. UMD won’t be a full-on hospital, but with a laboratory and other equipment on premises, they can address more urgent medical issues than a general practitioner. GMAP
Ugh Montague Street. Such wasted potential. There must be more than real estate offices and urgent care centers.
It is just so strange that nothing interesting ever comes to this very unique urban street.
