April 15, 2006–Brooklynites take their pretty streets seriously … You got a problem with that? Every year, the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens hosts its Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest, which invites the flower-bedecked streets of Bay Ridge to take on the towering sycamores of Ditmas Park. Last year, streets in Boerum Hill and Canarsie tied for first – Lefferts Gardens, Bed-Stuy, East Flatbush and Bridge Plaza got honorable mentions. But if you really want something stunning, walk along Willow Street in Brooklyn Heights, and drink it in. Willow Street is home to callery pear trees, cherry birches and some of the prettiest houses in the city. (Nearby Garden Place, Joralemon Street, Grace Court and Pierrepont Street are also all gorgeous.) Some of the houses date back to the 1820s; most are Federal-style frame and brick buildings, and Greek Revivals. The mini gardens in front have everything from yellow tulips to violets to daffodils. Townhouse are about $6.5 million; co-ops, a couple million. But walking the streets you will inevitably fuhgeddaboutit.
