At the risk of being called an ignoramus, we’ll fess up to the fact that we had no idea Pfizer had this massive complex at Flushing and Marcy. What piece of the global pharmaceutical machine operates here? GMAP

  1. Babs. they did indeed give space to a Charter School but I wouldn’t call it a “big success”. A friend of mine is on staff at the school and says it’s slowly descending into a nightmare situation. The Administration and Foundation simply have no clue what they’re doing.

And the Foundation? They fund another school — one that just had it’s Charter from the state up for renewal. Instead of the very common 5 year renewal they only received a 2 year provisional renewal. That is a VERY bad sign indeed.

  2. yup, the pharma behemoth got its start in brooklyn. pfizer makes raw materials for older products at that plant (like everyone’s favorite little blue pill, viagra)– it’s one of the oldest pharma manufacturing facilities in the country, so they’re not doing any cutting edge research or anything there.

  3. Wasn’t there another large factory building right across the street, or at least nearby? I think there is an empty lot right at the intersection of all of those streets, near the entrance to the Flushing Ave subway. I’m pretty sure I remember another Victorian era factory there.

I’ve only been over there maybe twice, and the first time was a few years ago, and I remember thinking it was an interesting place for a huge factory complex. At that time I had no idea Pfizer was an American company, let alone a Brooklyn company.

  4. The family gave a building in the Williamsburg site for Beginning with Children charter school (maybe 10 years ago, before the era of charter schools, it was an alternative school, since converted to charter school). It has been very successful and now includes a middle school. The foundation that sponsored that school also sponsored the Community Partnership charter school in Clinton Hill.

  5. This is so funny — I actually just happened upon this the other day for the first time, as I was just walking in the area. What amazed me first was the gigundo parking lot, totally empty (it was a weekend), apart from the guard, who came out and asked me if I was lost. I asked him what the lot was for and he told me about the Pfizer plant.
