We told you a couple of weeks ago that we were going to be upping the renovation component of the site and now we’re delivering. After announcing the launch of the Bed Stuy Reno on Monday, we are pleased to introduce the Gates Reno today. Amy and Omer closed on their Gates Avenue house, affectionately known as the Flinstone House because of its distinctive facade, about two months ago and are now embarking on a renovation while they and their two children live in the house. It’s gonna be interesting!

plaster dust cannot be contained no matter how much you say it can be. that dust creeps into everything and it is not healthy for children to breath it in. in addition,this is an old house–LEAD PAINT?
We lived in ours while renovating. It’s far from pleasant, but with proper plastic tenting, the dust can be fairly contained. And since it’s summer, they can just stay outside until bedtime!
When I was looking for a house two years ago, that brownstone was for sale for what I thought was a lot of money thenwithout seeing the inside. I could never actually schedule a with the owner who seemed to be absentee most of the time. It’s pretty wide I think and I heard that the upstairs duplex was liveable, but the OUTSIDE! Wow. What a job that will be! They will be breathing dust for a long time.
I echo another poster’s comments about the emotional roller coaster. I did radical/semi gut renovation of my brownstone floor by floor (with tenants!)and I am 2/3 through my duplex, the last of it and I am fried (so are the veteran tenants). I wish them luck, I really do. It is worth it, but wow, not easy.
are they kidding about living in it while the work is being done? that house looks like a gut renovation! is that healthly for the children?!
I thought that your place was a great sounding deal when it was listed. Congratulations! Looks like you have some nice details left. I’ve always liked the stone cornices holding up the lintel over the front door of your place, look like faces of people if I remember correctly… Good luck!
I wonder if the kids will remember the actual renovation of the house, or if they will always think of it as being “done”, since they will lve there with it “done” much longer.
I’m doing the same since last July w/ 2 kids also. It’s a real emotional roller coaster ride! (especially if you are GCing it yourself

Congrats and good luck! I’m currently going through a very extensive reno in Crown Heights North. I wish I was brave enough to document it on Brownstoner. I have plenty of pics; maybe I’ll get inspired. BTW, “The Flinstone House” is a great name.
