We’re recovering slowly from the psychological trauma we suffered upon witnessing the Niagra Falls-like flooding of our rental unit during the deluge of early October. Wish we could say the same for our cellar ceiling. We haven’t fixed it yet, but at least it looks like the insurance will fairly generously compensate us for the damage to the house. For a photo of ensuing mold, check out the reno blog today.

You get and use insurance for catastrophic events…fire, roof being torn off in a storm (which happened to a friend a couple of years ago and her premiums went way up anyway), stuff like that. But then again, we all know that insurance (and health insurance) is a racket…the bigwigs get rich and the rest of us get poorer and pay higher premiums when we really need the help.
then why bother getting insurance at all?
Always assume your homeowners rates will go up if you submit a claim. So, if at all possible, cough up the money for the repairs and save yourself the insurance greif.
Are people generally happy with Chubb? We looked into them but if I remember correctly their rates were about four times higher than other, I guess more mainstream, companies. But it sounds like you’ve gotten great service from them.
1:08 anon: can you give me an idea of a percentage? it went up 5%? 20%? 50%? $600 doesn’t give me much of an idea.
I also heard good things about Chubb but their rates are a bit more expensive then others. And yes, your rates will go up, just wait. I had an $6000 claim for stuff stolen from our house a couple of years ago — the result was that when the insurance came up for renewal the following year it was about $600 more expensive then it otherwise would have been.
All covered–actually got more than we thought. No idea if it will translate into higher premiums, but we got $12K from them without a fight. They (Chubb) were quite agreeable and responsive actually.
Have you had any issues with your insurance provider? I’ve just had some water damage (5-10k) and my insurance guys tell me everyday how much I will be screwed if I submit a claim. I gotta, but I worry about increased rates, etc. Did you have any problems? Was it covered by your homeowners policy?
No fun at all, Stoner. What a bummer.
