Architect and public whipping boy Robert Scarano got another mark against his name last month. According to The Daily News, the Dumbo-based architect was fined $2,800 for failing to inspect a Williamsburg worksite frequently enough in 2007. Scarano only inspected the work taking place at 170 North 5th Street two times instead of the required seven; meanwhile excavation work at the site undermined the building next door. GMAP

Why not do some research instead of opening your combined two big stupid mouths.
First architects do not monitor construction, second the DOB are the real villians here as always, third Scarano was dismissed from the duncan case because……yes that’s right…… contractors build buildings not architects…wake the f–k up already its so boring.
And IMBY get yourself a real job already and stop feeding off the cities poor.
$2500? Check out this violation in a year from now and I bet it will still remain unpaid.
When a contractor/developer/engineer or architect like Scarano fails to protect the adjoining property during construction, as in this case, the property owner is basically screwed. Don’t expect any help from The DOB.
1. Most insurance companies DO NOT cover damage to your property caused by out side contractors.
2. The DOB routinely issues violations to the owner of the damaged property for failure to maintain…. The liability rests with the damaged property owner to make his property safe. This may include vacating the building for a year or more.
Of coarse the developer and his crew will deny responsibility for the cracking and shifting siting “pre-existing conditions”. Engineers and lawyers must be hired to “prove” otherwise.
Legal fees for any civil case like this can easily run over $200,000. Engineering fees $25,000-$50,000. Another $100,000 to stabilize the damaged foundation.
The developer will often change LLC’s and sell off the property in an effort to avoid responsibility long before any judgement can be made. Especially in Brooklyn Supreme Court where judges take 6 months to decide a single pretrial motion. (When they even bother to read them at all)
Sad story.
DOB has no teeth. ECB has no pull. This is worthless.
Now, go after him for the death of Anthony Duncan and you’ll peak my interest.
Until then, he’s still a criminal in architect’s clothing.
Maybe if the fines were significant, there’d be fewer violations!!!!!
