May is design month in New York City, which means there will be an abundance of open studios, panels, exhibitions, and other events highlighting the latest in design and interiors.

NYCxDESIGN, which promotes the city’s creative community and is organized by a nonprofit, runs from May 15 through May 21 this year. The online calendar shows design-related events happening in every borough except Staten Island this year.

The anchor trade show, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) runs from May 18 to 20 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan. Wanted, which focuses on new and emerging talent, will have a lounge and a showcase of student design at ICFF.

For Brooklyn design lovers who want to stay in the borough, there are plenty of events to enjoy.

Hear the results of a visioning project for Downtown Brooklyn’s Columbus Park on May 15. The presentation at Borough Hall will include Claire Weisz of WXY and Michael Van Valkenburgh of Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, who will share the details of proposed redesign, including the lawns, skate parks, and playgrounds.

A tour of Powerhouse Arts’ fabrication facility on May 16 will allow attendees to get a look at how art is fabricated in the workshops of Gowanus’ former Batcave. There will also be a chance to visit textile and ceramic studios, the print lab, and more.

The Atlantic Avenue BID is hosting the second Atlantic Avenue Day of Design on May 17. Shoppers along the avenue can attend workshops, chat with designers, and check out some special exhibits. Details on the participating events and organizations are included in an online map.

Also on May 17 locals can head to the Brooklyn Navy Yard for Design Day. There will be open studios, timed demos, and in the evening a reveal of the new public art installation along Flushing Avenue.
