No Gut Reno for Iconic Brooklyn Heights Mid Century Modern Townhouse
A new owner’s renovations at the townhouse designed by Joseph and Mary Merz as their own residence appear unlikely to interfere with their vision.

A sharp-eyed tipster noticed what appeared to be rooftop mockups for the Landmarks Preservation Commission happening at 48 Willow Place, the iconic modern townhouse designed by architects Mary and Joe Merz for their own residence. Also visible through a third-story window was what looked to be a gut renovation in progress.

As readers may recall, the Brooklyn Heights property was sold twice after the couple passed away, most recently in 2024 after a sympathetic alteration by prominent architect Ian Starling intended to update the house for modern living while preserving its spirit.
Luckily for mid century modern fans, that vision is likely to endure, DOB permits issued in April reveal. The new owner is reframing the roof and adding skylights to the upper story.

Meanwhile, the openings on the lower levels, including the front door and its sidelights, are being replaced with exact replicas of original, per an LPC permit issued in July.
