In the wake of the most recent construction-related tragedy, officials are looking to beef up safety standards, according to the Post. Mayor Bloomberg is expected announce new measures that include the ability to track safety violations by firm, rather than simply by job site. There have been 15 deaths so far this year at construction sites, as compared to 12 in all of 2007. The proposed regulations would require City Council legislation. Other ideas include classifying heretofore minor violations, like having debris littered around, hazardous, thus making making it easier for inspectors to shut down sites. Even though new safety proposals are in the offing, Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday that he thinks the DOB is already doing a good job. “I don’t think you should start worrying about looking up. The likelihood of anything happening to you is so small,” said Bloomberg. “The Buildings Department is probably doing a pretty good job on balance.”

  1. I’m trying to follow the logic here.

Bloomberg says the DOB is doing a good job.

And yet he fired the woman who ran the DOB after the previous crane accident.

Okay let’s say the DOB really is doing a good job now as Bloomie says. So, what, it’s improved that much in a few weeks since the firing and shakeup?

Come ON. Nothing he says makes sense.

  2. “I don’t think you should start worrying about looking up. The likelihood of anything happening to you is so small,” said Bloomberg

Yo Mike tell that to the tourist that was killed by crane #1 while in the city for the St. Patties Day Parade.

  3. I will never understand the tendency of so-called intelligent politicians to make the most inane, stupid comments in the wake of tragedy. Two cranes and 15 deaths already this year- and we shouldn’t worry about looking up? What a world of disdain for the construction workers and we civilians. The DOB is doing a great job? maybe they are- in Seattle.
