Earlier this week, Forgotten NY dropped a great post on the forgotten dairies of New York City. Included in the mix with some better-known names like Sheffield Farms and Borden was the M.H. Renken Dairy at Classon and Myrtle, just a quick horse-drawn carriage ride from Brownstoner HQ.

  1. The building housing the Billie Holiday Theatre in Restoration Plaza, on Fulton Street in Bed Stuy used to be a dairy. I have heard stories from local old timers who still remember getting milk there.

There is a building on the right side of Atlantic Ave, going towards Queens, somewhere a few blocks after Pennsylvania Ave, in East New York, that used to be a dairy. It still has reliefs of cows’ heads on the exterior, up near the roof line. Very cool.

  2. I’ve worked in one of the former dairies, otherwise known as the CBS Broadcast Center on West 57th Street.
Always joked that the flies in the basement cafeteria were descended from the originals on the cows back in the ’50’s. Always rumors of cow bones in the basement.
