turbinesThe Municipal Arts Society is hosting a panel discussion tonight at 6:30 on preserving the East River industrial heritage–a subject made particularly timely by the landmarking kerfuffle surrounding the Austin, Nichols building. In addition, other buildings to be discussed include the Con Ed Waterside Power Station in Manhattan (pictured), the Domino Sugar Plant in Brooklyn, and the Sohmer Piano Factory in Queens. Panelists will include Steven Evans, Assistant Director of Dia:Beacon; Ward Dennis, preservationist with Higgins & Quasebarth and the Waterfront Preservation Alliance of Greenpoint & Williamsburg; Mary Habstritt, President of the Roebling Chapter of the Society for Industrial Archeology; and Frank E. Sanchis III, Senior Vice President of the MAS. The panel will be moderated by Charles V. Bagli of The New York Times. Interested peeps should email rsvp@mas.org or call 212-935-2075.
