Forgetten NY: Kicking Ass and Taking Names
Forgotten NY just published a new series called “Meet Me At…” that looks at a bunch of older apartment buildings that share one thing in common: Their name carved prominently above the door. The Clarice, for example, is located in Cobble Hill and may even have been the inspiration for the Hannibal Lecter-chasing FBI agent of the same name. FNY left out one of our favorites, the double shot on St. James Place just south of Fulton.
Meet Me At… [Forgotten NY]
I guess Daniel’s comment was directed to me. I certainly don’t expect everyone to agree with me and will continue to chime in when PLG is mentioned, but I will try to separate serious comments from obvious trolls. The gratuitous negtive comments about Lefferts, on an unrelated thread, clearly fall into the latter category. I realize that I prolonged the “Lefferts bashing” with what was intended to be a humerous response to what seemed to be more of an ironic commentary than an actual attempt to bash my neighborhood [“I\’d like to live in a building that has a name. So long as it is not in Lefferts”] and will try to be less thin skinned in future so as not to encougage the trolls–serious discussionsare banother matter entirely. The problem is that you can’t always spot a troll immediately.
Daniel, I will not take seriously, nor respect, anyone who uses every thread, about any topic, to bash a neighborhood. If you will notice, this thread is about naming buildings, not Lefferts Manor. The Lefferts basher is a negative force on this blog.
I guess you should not take me seriously either. I feel pretty much the same way about Lefferts and yes, I did live there at one time. Why are you unable to accept that some people on this board simply do not agree with you? I respect your opinions, but you should respect ours as well.
Bravo dt! I made the mistake of taking this troll seriously.
WTF! I am trying to read about the naming of buildings and the Lefferts Basher gets in my way, again! Enough of your attempts to turn everyone off to Lefferts. Anyone who knows the nabe knows you are full of shit! Whoever you are, shut up! I am tired of you.
I agree with Sloperman. I lived in PLG for about five years, on Sterling. It was a very risky place to live, and before that I lived in East Oakland, which is not exactly Disneyland. I respect the pluck of old time residents of PLG, but I would not move to their neighborhood even if the brownstones there were free.
I’ve lived on Fenimore Street between Flatbush and Bedford for going on four years now, and I haven’t had any problems — just warm neighbors, many more than I ever met in my old ‘hood, Brooklyn Heights.
I’m very sorry about what happened to your father (I hadn’t heard about anything like that happening on Fenimore either), but I can vouch for PLG as well — it sure ain’t Park Slope, but few people want it to become that. (There’s currently a thread on the Lefferts Yahoo mailing list about concerns over “revitalization vs. gentrification” in the neighborhood.) If it’s a “black pit,” none of us have gotten the memo — there’s concern that the neighborhood is changing too much.
I’m very sorry about what happened to your father and I can see how such an experience would sour anyone about the neighborhood ijn which it occured. However, I’ve read about similar horrors in most brownstone neighborhoods(and even such safe neighborhoodsasthe upper east side). Sadly home invasions have become a major problem even in suburban Long Island.
I can only repeat that my own experience in PLG since 1974 has been very different and, in my 31 yeares here, I’ve NEVER heard of anything as terrible as what you reported about your father.
I grew up (quickly) on Fenimore St. Two years ago my 80 plus year old father was attacked IN HIS HOME and nearly killed. So, spare me the PLG propaganda. Also, please spare me the BUT THAT HAPPENS IN ALL NEIGHBORHOODS argument. So what if it happens in all neighborhoods? Does that mean Brownsville is as safe as Park Slope? PLG is a black pit.
