Ocean on the Park isn’t the only micro-district up for discussion at the Landmark Preservation Commission tomorrow. While the 12-house row in Prospect Lefferts Gardens will hopefully be deemed worthy of getting placed on the LPC’s calendar, another long-overlooked but worthy cluster of old houses is up for designation. The commission will hear and vote on whether to award landmark status to the Alice and Agate Courts Historic District, two adjacent cul-de-sacs to the north of Atlantic Avenue in Bedford Stuyvesant. (Click on the photos for larger view.) According to a NY Times article, both were designed by the architect Walter M. Coots and developed by by the Swiss-born Florian Grosjean in the late 1880s. The landmarking effort shifted into high gear when a developer named Shlomo Menashe bought a property that backs up onto Agate Court and tried to build a new three-family house; luckily his plans were not approved by the Department of Buildings but it was enough to scare the community into action. Let’s hope LPC green-lights the designation tomorrow!

  1. I just got back from the LPC meeting where the Commissioners voted unanimously to designate this Historic District AND [closer to my heart] calendar the proposed Ocean on the Park Historic District.

    Yahoo!!

  2. Good luck to both the Bed Stuyers and Ocean Avenue people in getting calendared tomorrow. Both areas are unique and worthy of designation.

Both cul de sacs are interesting, and worth pulling off Atlantic Ave to really look at the houses. I’ve enjoyed their “rediscovery” every time I go by, especially when on foot. I’m glad the LPC is taking action. I look forward to reading the final report, after everything is official.

Amzi, do you meet often, and what time tonight?

  3. Corbin for the facade work… He has pretty much taught everyone around here. For interior work use please please use Raul you can see both of there work at my neighbor at 111 MacDonough Street. That house was on the tour this year… Corbin did my parlor ceiling but Raul would have done a better job with the plaster he is a real artist. Rauls uncle who I hear is the best in NY taught Corbin. You would love this guy once he is finished with you interior plaster Everyone has great things to say about them both really…

  4. Amzi…who’s your recommendation for the facade. I have gottewn several quotes already and still want to try the guy that lives around the corner from me on Halsey. Bill Cunningham uses him…I think his company goes by the name “CTI” or “CTTI”

BTW…when’s the election for city councilman??? i saw Bill giving out electioneering stuff on his run for office

    Thanks

  5. Yeah landmarks could slow you down just a bit. Do you have someone to do you facade? I have a great guy that is really really good.. I also have a guy that is good for plaster work he seems like he came out of the 1880 and he is not a arm and a leg. I think the landmarking is still maybe a year away. Dave the landmarks meeting is tonight in the lower basement level of Restoration Plaza – please confirm location with Guard at Security Desk in the Lobby. You should try to make it out…

  6. Amzi…what’s the timeframe for extending Stuyvesant Heights and what are some of the things that stand in the way?

I need to get some facade work done and I’m sure I’d better get it done before landmarking, correct?

    Thanks
