Wood Double-Hung Windows

From what I understand Andersen and Marvin seem to be the best quality wood windows in the market, but are there other good quality brands that are a little cheaper, and does anyone have any suggestions on showrooms to visit in Brooklyn and Queens to get a quote?

Hi,I am planning to replace windows of my living room and kitchen of my parent’s home in Toronto. I have received quote from [Landmark home solutions](http://www.landmarkquality.com/) for a single hung window and a double hung window installation. The difference is around $350\. I have heard that double hung windows have certain advantages over single hung. Is it really worth spending $400 more to install double hung instead of single hung window. Please share your suggestions.Thank you

I think that LePage Windows (LePage Millwork) is an excellent window and much better than Marvin, Andersen, Pella, Kolbe etc… They are competitively priced (especially with the Canadian Dollar being low) and have representatives here in NY. Their windows incorporate Mahogany on the outside and whatever species you want on the inside- I doubt the big three offer that. Additionally their double hung is a true double hung with weights and pulleys. Its a great window and I highly recommend it. http://www.lepagemillwork.com/en/Home.shtml

We went with Pella Architect series windows and are very happy with them. We got them through our GC so can’t recommend showrooms but from my research we saved a decent amount compared to Marvins that we had also considered.

I am happy with the Trimline all-wood sash windows I had installed from Window We Are. They are very insulating and were about half the price of Marvin.

Dykes Lumber on 6th street in Gownaus saved me thousands from other showrooms, they have an upstairs showrooms. I got Marvins and my own installers (who did the measurements) They have other options. I love our Marvins, getting them refinished is worth it.

We have several Marvin windows and love the look and heft of them and, especially, the insulation values. But they were very costly and I’ve heard people say you pay more because they do so much advertising. So perhaps Kolbe, Lincoln, and Loewen are worth checking out. I’ve noticed Loewens used in some architect-managed renovations in our neighborhood.

I have both Marvin and Anderson windows. Thye both are great insulators and I like them both but the Marvin “plunger pin” screen design is a real PITA

I had one large Kolbe window installed in front parlor & it’s great. Not cheap, but looks really well made. I used Windows We Are, whose call-returning is spotty but installers were great.

Kolbe also are good quality windows, that may be more or less than Marvin depending upon particular windows. Andersen generally speaking are materially cheaper.

Brooklyn Windows and Doors on McDonald avenue. We have Jeld Wen windows and doors. I’m sure price was an issue when we put them in. Quality is excellent.
