windows in new construction
Hi, We just moved to a duplex in new building. The upstairs which we will be using for a guest room and a office is an open plan (peaked ceiling) with a door and two windows that lead to a private terrace. Silly me, but I just noticed that the windows do not open. The only way to get fresh air into the room is to either leave the door open (which we can’t do because we have cats and a toddler) or to constantly run the air unit. We did this last month and our utility bill doubled (strange, as I thought a new building would be more energy efficient). Does this break any tenant rules? The only way I can think to somewhat fix is to put up a screen door. Any advice or suggestions?

Ha, gotta love new construction. Our last apartment had a door off the kitchen leading to the garden, but there was no screen door. For $45 at Lowes, we picked up a vinyl screen door and installed it in about an hour. We did, however, get our landlords permission first, as should you. Given your living situation with pets and children, I woudln’t recommend a cheap door, though. You’ll probably want one with a latch that your toddler can’t access and somehow wander onto the terrace.
